Finally in Control...
My story culminates 23 years of heartache. My name is Lydia Ignacio. I am 23 years old I weigh 223lbs currently. 223lbs is still a lot, but considering where I am coming from it is a small number and big achievement. My story is not only my own. It tells the tale of my bloodline and a future sown into the pages of my life, that thankfully I have been able to break free from. I will do my best to briefly tell it.

I lost my father at the age of 8 by a heart attack. My father suffered from obesity, a legacy he passed down to his 4 children; my brother and I, and my 2 half brothers as well. Bad habits and a false attachment to food were also passed down to his youngest daughter. My fondest memories of me and my father were his cooking and eating together. When he died, food was my connection to him. Despite, the concerns and warnings from my mother and her family, my brother and I did not understand our participation in walking down the same path. A young girl at 8 had to endure the harsh feelings of deprivation by a series of diet methods, and not to mention the constant banter from friends and families that I “was not normal”. The perpetual warnings to be careful when playing with other kids as not to “squish them”, the development of severe asthma when doing everyday activities, burdens too emotionally costly for any child or adult for that matter. Growing into a teenager and young adult only made the circumstances worsen. Close friends were more compassionate, but the public never finds sympathy. The constant commentary and stares when walking down the streets can make anyone withdraw into insecurity and depression. The worse result is the mental breakdown that instills a belief that “I am not normal, not good enough”. The symptoms result in more over eating, more self-destruction; self-hate. I found myself at a young adult age of 22, weighing at an astounding 360lbs. An extremely dangerous weight for a 5’1” female with a long family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart disease. The most evident hazard was the apparent progression to immobility. Walking became excruciating.

I did well in hiding and pushing down those feelings. I in some form knew my value, did not believe in it, but knew it. In desperation for my health, I decided to go for weight loss surgery.
